Dear Parents,
As you probably have noticed, report cards and progress reports went home today.
Although somewhat simplistic in design, the assessment reports I sent home are
not much different from the information that goes home on public school progress
reports-minus conduct assessments which are unnecessary here because these
students are so well mannered. I think the students are doing great! I have had
such a wonderful time teaching them this last quarter. I really look forward to
Thursdays.
I did want to mention, though, that the Middle School class showed great anxiety
about their progress reports. Each one seemed convinced that he/she had failed.
I repeatedly tell them they are doing very well. I think that some of this
anxiety may be attributed to their unfamiliarity with formal written
assessments. Typically, Middle Schoolers are the most self-critical of all age
groups to teach drawing skills to. This is because they are developing adult
aesthetic sensibilities but are still struggling with developing and refining
their fine motor skills. By the time they reach about the 10th grade most
students are much more relaxed about drawing (self-criticism wanes but can still
be an issue through adulthood for many). Praise God that there is, therefore,
now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus! This applies to all areas
of our lives.
In addition to the assessments, I sent home a two page explanation about the
midterm drawing project which is due January 19th. I have attached a copy of
this for you to read as well. Their initial idea is due next week along with
this week's homework--another glass object drawn on toned paper. I have seen
some tremendous growth in these students over the past three weeks and look
forward to what lies ahead. If you have any questions about the report cards,
progress reports, midterm assignment or anything else please do not hesitate to
contact me.
Regards,
Marcie Concepcion
