Dear Parents,
We had a little blip in our plans today. I was only able to teach the high
school class before my assistant said "I've had enough" (he's only two). I
thought with the disruption to the routine it might serve to send out this
update as we won't be having class until the week after next.
High School
We worked on reversing the positive and negative space in our drawing so that
the drawing became about the space around the object rather than the object
itself. I have seen such an improvement in the students over the last 3 weeks. I
am so encouraged and I hope they are too.
For homework they were given the assignment to draw a view through a window
without actually drawing the window itself. It is to be a line drawing (not on
toned paper) on 12" X 18" paper-the bigger sheets in their portfolios. By
drawing the view and leaving the window blank it would automatically register as
a window even with the lack of detail. Several students expressed their concern
that the views through their windows are lots of trees loaded with leaves and
will take much longer than the 3 hours allotted for homework over the next two
weeks. Here are some alternatives: the view through a balcony or a fence, the
view through a piece of lattice, through a bicycle wheel spokes or through a
table fan. Whichever item they pick, there should be enough things to draw on
the other side so that the actual object is suggested by the lack of drawing
(the blank shape of the object) in that area. I hope this makes sense to you.
Please contact me if there are any questions.
Please also encourage them to continue to work on/think about their midterm
drawing ideas. We already have some that have decided and I think they will be
great. Please have them contact me with any questions about their ideas.
Remember it cannot be a drawing out of your imagination!
Middle School
I look forward to hearing how the perspective drawing went with Mrs. Peiffer and
Mrs. Mullery. This is always a fun project and I hope the enjoyed it For
homework I would like them to do another 1 point perspective drawing and it can
be a room, a hall, a street or a tower like the Escher drawing. This is their
opportunity to put as much creativity and imagination into these as they can. In
addition, they may pick one other object to draw from life in their sketch book.
It should be interesting to them but, please, no pets or stuffed animals. They
have the option of doing it in line only or on a toned background and including
value.
Please also encourage them to continue to work on/think about their midterm
drawing ideas. Some students have already decided on what they will draw and I
caution them to remember that they only need to put in a minimum of 5 hours.
There were some great ideas but rather complicated ones. Please have them
contact me with any questions about their ideas. Remember they cannot be
drawings out of their imaginations! They must be able to look at the actual
objects or a photograph that they took of it.
Have a blessed and wonderful Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for.
What a loving and merciful God we have!
